Itanagar: The race for Arunachal Pradesh’s single Rajya Sabha seat is heating up, though the state BJP has yet to name its official candidate. Polling is set for June 18 at the Legislative Assembly, following the official start of the election process.
State BJP president Kaling Moyong confirmed that around 15 hopefuls, including party veteran Kenyir Ringu, are interested in the position. While the party deliberates, former Itanagar Mayor Tamme Phassang became the first to formally enter the race on June 2. He pledged to focus on the development of all state districts if he secures the seat.
The window for candidates to submit nominations closes on June 8, with a final withdrawal date set for June 11. The party leadership maintains that the nomination process remains active and no final decision has been reached.
Beyond the election, officials addressed public speculation regarding the state government. Both Moyong and Phassang dismissed rumours of a leadership transition, insisting that Chief Minister Pema Khandu retains widespread backing. They credited his decade of governance with driving significant growth across the region and confirmed he will remain in his post.
