Guwahati: Artist Marshall Baruah restored a portrait of Assamese singer Zubeen Garg at a flyover pillar in Guwahati on Thursday. The original mural, which featured the message Comrades Never Die, was recently erased by authorities, sparking significant backlash from fans and the local cultural community.

Baruah moved forward with the recreation despite claiming that Guwahati police discouraged him from the project. He stated that he had been told he could only proceed with the painting after July 3. Addressing the media during the event, the artist questioned the motivation behind the removal, saying, "I did not understand how a portrait of Zubeen Garg could cause any harm."

The restoration attracted a large crowd to the Ganeshguri area, where supporters chanted and sang to honor the singer. The original removal occurred during a citywide beautification effort in preparation for a visit by Japanese politician Sanae Takaichi. Garima Saikia Garg, the singer's wife, previously criticized the erasure, suggesting the decision implied the artist's image was unwelcome in the city.
