Shillong: Police arrested a suspected drug peddler in Umiam late Tuesday night. Officers seized 21.71 grams of heroin from the suspect during the operation. The Anti-Narcotic Task Force intercepted Jaziel Nongjop Syiem as he rode his scooty toward Shillong.

Syiem tried to bolt. The suspect spotted a police naka check around 11 PM and attempted to flee the scene. Personnel detained him quickly. They conducted a search at the Lad Umiam junction in front of independent witnesses, following strict NDPS Act protocols.

Officers found two soap cases hidden inside the jacket the suspect was wearing. Field tests confirmed the yellowish-orange powder inside was heroin. Police officially stated, "The suspect is currently in custody and a case is being registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act." Investigators are now tracking where the drugs came from and where the dealer planned to take them.
