AMSU Accuses Manipur University of Administrative Corruption and Governance Failures

Imphal: The All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) has leveled serious allegations against Manipur University, claiming that administrative irregularities and self-serving interests are damaging the institution. Secretary General Salam Changkhonba stated that the university is suffering from a lack of transparency and accountability, pointing to a surge in legal battles reaching the High Court and the Supreme Court as evidence of systemic governance failures.

AMSU contends that university officials are actively bypassing the Manipur University Act. The student body highlighted the ongoing dispute over the appointment of the Vice-Chancellor (In-charge) as a primary example of authorities ignoring statutory provisions. These controversies have reportedly hurt the university's academic standing and its performance in the National Institutional Ranking Framework.

Specific concerns were raised regarding the School of Education and the Department of Teacher Education. AMSU questioned the leadership of Prof. Premlata Maisnam, who simultaneously serves as the Dean of Education and the Head of the Department of Teacher Education. The union suggested that her appointments and recent decisions within the department appear driven by external personal agendas rather than academic necessity.

Furthermore, the union challenged the legitimacy of a new Director position created for the upcoming four-year Integrated Teacher Education Programme. Citing a May 4, 2026, registrar order, AMSU alleged this role lacks proper justification and does not align with the established regulations set by the National Council for Teacher Education.
