Guwahati: Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi staged a fresh protest outside the Assam Legislative Assembly on Monday. He wore a black shirt and mask to demand the immediate release of tribal leader Aditya Rabha and farmers' leader Pranab Doley. The arrests followed public resistance against government land policies.
Gogoi claims the state aims to hand over indigenous territory to large corporate groups. He argues these arrests are meant to silence dissent. "We will never allow the land of the indigenous people and Assamese people to be handed over," Gogoi told reporters.
The legislator is using the ongoing Budget Session to highlight his grievances. He has held daily demonstrations since the session opened. Flooding remains a primary focus of his campaign. He previously wore a life jacket inside the Assembly to mock the government's failure to stop Guwahati's artificial floods.
Gogoi pushed for a permanent fix to the city's drainage systems. He also demanded similar flood management infrastructure for his home constituency of Sivasagar. The MLA continues to keep the pressure on state officials.
