Agartala: Agartala Traffic Police is readying a strict plan to handle the heavy surge of pedestrians and vehicles during Durga Puja. Traffic SP Kanta Jangir unveiled the new regulations Friday at the Traffic Bhavan in the AD Nagar police line.
Key congestion points like Nagerjala Bridge, City Centre, and Orient Chowmuhani top the watch list. Police will adjust flow based on real-time traffic volume. They also plan to clamp down on illegal street parking, one-way violations, and heavy vehicles parked in market zones. Following talks with Maharajganj Bazar traders and locals, authorities are pushing for better compliance.
Pass issuance rules are getting tougher this year. SP Jangir confirmed that no Puja pass will be issued to anyone with unpaid traffic fines. The department is building a digital system with the Directorate of Information Technology to fix the process. "Effective traffic management during Durga Puja would require cooperation from the public, traders, transport organisations and other stakeholders, in addition to enforcement and penalties," Jangir stated.
Drivers can settle fines issued before April 2026 via the e-Challan portal, Virtual Court, or physical court. However, fines issued after April 2026 must be paid directly to the Traffic Unit. The department is also preparing to roll out a Next-Gen Challan system. During the festival, no-entry rules will run daily from 5 pm to 1 am.
