Guwahati: The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) has ramped up its statewide protests against the rising costs of fuel and essential goods. Demonstrators gathered in various locations, including Tinsukia and Morigaon, to voice their frustration over an inflation crisis they say is severely straining household budgets.
In Tinsukia, the protest grew volatile as members engaged in a heated scuffle with local police. During the demonstration in Morigaon, activists burned an effigy of Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri. AASU central organising secretary Rupjyoti Medhi criticized the central government for failing to meet public expectations, accusing officials of neglecting their duty to manage supply chains and control the cost of living.
The price of petrol in Guwahati has reached approximately Rs 105.74 per litre. Activists point out that high fuel costs trigger a ripple effect throughout the economy, driving up prices for milk, groceries, and life-saving medicines. Beyond household expenses, the rising costs are burdening transport operators and small businesses, creating broader inflationary pressure across both urban and rural regions. The student union is demanding immediate government intervention to lower fuel taxes and provide relief to citizens.
