Aizawl: The ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) achieved a historic milestone on Thursday by securing its first-ever seat in the Rajya Sabha. Party leader K. Laltluangkima won the election for Mizoram’s sole Upper House vacancy, marking a significant step for the party that was founded only in 2017.
Laltluangkima received 26 out of the 36 votes cast, defeating Mizo National Front candidate Zothansangi Hmar, who garnered 10 votes. According to Assembly Secretary and Returning Officer Zothansanga Ralte, "Laltluangkima secured 26 votes out of the 36 votes polled." Three legislators abstained from the process, including BJP members Dr. K. Beichhua and K. Hrahmo, along with the lone Congress MLA, C. Ngunlianchunga. ZPM legislator W. Chhuanawma was unable to participate due to health issues.
This win marks the eighth time an individual has been elected to the Upper House from Mizoram since the state was a Union Territory in 1972. Laltluangkima, born in 1963, brings a diverse professional background to his new role. Before his political career, he managed the Synod Electronic Communication Department for the Mizoram Presbyterian Church for over a decade and founded the children's magazine Kristian Naupang.
His academic credentials include a Bachelor of Commerce degree from St. Anthony’s College, studies in Christian Communication in England, and a Master’s degree in Plumbing from an American institution. He entered politics in 1997 and currently serves as the official spokesperson for the ZPM. He takes over the seat formerly held by the MNF’s K. Vanlalvena.
