Wokha Market Faces Severe Public Toilet Shortage

Kohima: Wokha residents struggle with a major civic failure. The town serves as the district's commercial heart, yet it lacks working public toilets. The primary facility at the main market remains locked behind a gate. Users must track down an attendant to get the key. It rarely stays open.

Government funds built toilets under the Swachh Bharat Mission. None of them function for the public. Shoppers and workers now beg for access at restaurants or petrol pumps. Many residents resort to hiding in secluded spots when they have no other options. This creates a mess.

Local business owners suffer the most. One shopkeeper explained the grim reality of daily life in the market. She said, "I and others often resort to urinating in a dustbin inside their shops before disposing of the waste later." Others rely on friends or nearby buildings just to handle natural needs.

The lack of facilities hits women, the elderly, and children the hardest. Menstruation becomes a logistical nightmare without clean, private spaces. Locals want officials to stop stalling. They demand functional, maintained toilets at taxi stands and market zones immediately. These sites need steady water and constant access to meet basic hygiene standards.
