Agartala: The Union Ministry of Home Affairs has officially sanctioned the establishment of a new India Reserve Battalion (IRBn) in Tripura to bolster the state's security apparatus. The approval, communicated to Tripura Chief Secretary J K Sinha on May 15, includes a one-time financial grant of 50 crore from the central government. Furthermore, an additional allocation of 30 crore has been earmarked for necessary infrastructure development and land acquisition.
State authorities are required to complete the recruitment process for this new force within two years. To oversee the selection, a recruitment board led by an officer of Additional Director General rank has been established, supported by a six-member committee. The state has already announced plans to recruit 916 constables, including women, to fill the ranks. This force will be raised in accordance with national guidelines for armed police, with the state government responsible for ongoing annual expenses and recurring operational costs.
Tripura currently maintains 13 active battalions, including an all-women unit, after previously disbanding two of its 15 original units. The new battalion is slated for deployment in border security and anti-insurgency operations. As an India Reserve Battalion, its personnel may also be deployed by the central government to assist with security duties across other parts of the country as required.
