Guwahati: Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways Ajay Tamta visited Sikkim on June 8 to inspect progress on National Highway 10. During his visit, the minister reviewed ongoing slope stabilisation efforts and road safety upgrades along the Rangpo-Ranipool stretch.
The ministry is implementing several technical solutions to protect the highway from frequent landslides. These include micropiling, reinforced concrete retaining walls, rockfall barriers, and hillside stabilisation systems. These measures are designed to ensure consistent connectivity for residents, tourists, and transport operators throughout the year.
Tamta also evaluated plans for a 240-metre cut-and-cover tunnel. Officials stated that the project is expected to improve road safety and minimise disruptions caused by landslides and adverse weather conditions along the vulnerable stretch. This construction is part of a larger initiative to modernise Sikkim's road network to support regional economic development and improve travel reliability.
