Agartala: A court in Unakoti district sentenced Mahendra Nama and his wife Arati Nama to two years of rigorous imprisonment for killing their newborn granddaughter. The couple, residents of Khowrabil in Kailashahar, also face a fine of Rs 5,000 each. If they fail to pay, they will serve two extra months behind bars.
The crime occurred on February 23, 2020. The couple's daughter had returned to her parental home after experiencing marital trouble in Karimganj, Assam. She gave birth to a baby girl at the house that night. Prosecutors claim the grandparents killed the infant immediately.
The horror surfaced the next morning. A local child discovered the body near a stream. Villagers gathered, but the accused moved the infant to a nearby forest to destroy evidence. Pradip Nama, a villager, filed the initial complaint. Police officer Kamalakanta Jamatia led the investigation and filed the final chargesheet.
Public Prosecutor Sunirmal Deb noted the court reached its verdict after hearing 17 witnesses. Regarding the trial outcome, Deb stated, "The court, however, acquitted another accused in the case after finding insufficient evidence against him." The judge dismissed all charges against the third suspect due to the lack of proof.
