Umsning Village Leaders Demand Better Healthcare Access

Shillong: Village leaders in Umsning met with Health Minister Wailadmiki Shylla to demand immediate fixes for their struggling community health centre. The facility serves 226 villages but fails to meet basic needs. It has functioned as a community health centre for ten years, yet progress stopped there.

The centre lacks a dedicated male ward. Patients suffer because of this gap. Forum president Franky Nongrum said, "The most pressing issue is the absence of a dedicated male ward. This has caused immense hardship, especially for those coming from remote areas."

Only two doctors work at the site. They handle up to 400 patients on market days. Long lines force many people to leave without care. The forum wants the government to hire at least six doctors to run the place. They also want new medical facilities built in nearby areas like Kyrdemkulai to spread the load.

Sub-centres in the region have effectively stopped working. This forces everyone to travel to the main facility. The forum also asked for better diagnostic gear and a mobile blood donation unit. Minister Shylla promised to inspect the centre himself.
