Shillong: Gideon Tympuin and Daniel Dabiangbha Warjri head to Dhaka, Bangladesh. They represent India at the 10th Cadet, Junior, U-21 and Senior South Asian Karate Championship. The event runs from 15 to 19 July.
Gideon competes in the men's U-21 individual kata event. He punched his ticket after grabbing a gold medal at the 5th KIO Senior and U-21 National Karate Championship held in New Delhi earlier this year. Daniel joins the boys' junior individual kumite -68kg category. He earned his spot with a silver medal finish at the 5th KIO Sub-Junior, Cadet and Junior National Karate Championship in Dehradun this June.
The All Meghalaya Karate-Do Association held a send-off ceremony for the duo on Saturday. Officials handed out gifts and offered support before the fighters leave for the international stage. The association remains optimistic about their chances in Dhaka. "We are confident that they will perform to the best of their abilities and bring laurels to the state and the nation," the group said in a formal statement.
