Trucking Unions Demand Better Security Following Driver Killing in Ukhrul

Imphal: Trucking organizations across Northeast India have condemned the killing of an FCI driver, calling for immediate security improvements to protect transport workers. Nitish Kumar, a 57-year-old from West Bengal, was shot dead on May 29 while driving a supply truck along National Highway 202 near TM Kasom village in the Ukhrul district.

The Northeast Federation of Truck Owner, Driver and Trade Union, joined by the Senapati District Truck Owners and Drivers unions, labeled the attack a cowardly act against an innocent civilian. They expressed alarm that the incident occurred despite a security escort, demanding a thorough investigation into the security failure that allowed the ambush to take place.

These unions are now urging the Manipur government and central authorities to apprehend those responsible and provide compensation to Kumar’s family. The victim was the primary provider for his three minor children and elderly parents, making the loss particularly devastating.

Beyond the demand for justice, the unions warned that targeting transporters threatens the regional supply chain for essential goods. They have called for increased patrols on vulnerable routes and urged all parties in the conflict to choose dialogue over violence to restore stability in the region.
