Agartala: The Tripura government plans to equip 1.5 lakh families with rooftop solar power systems at a minimal cost of ₹1,000 per household. Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced the initiative on Tuesday during the release of the Rooftop Solar PV System Handbook in Agartala. The program targets low-income households that consume less than 50 units of electricity per month.
These solar systems, which hold a market value of approximately ₹66,000, will be heavily subsidized by the government. Depending on the size of the installation, subsidies range from ₹33,000 for a 1-kilowatt system up to ₹85,800 for a 3-kilowatt setup. Officials estimate that about 3 lakh families in the state currently fall into the low-consumption category, with half of them included in this first phase of the rollout.
The state aims to generate 150 megawatts of solar power through this project, with implementation scheduled to begin next month. To support the transition, the Tripura State Electricity Corporation partnered with the German development agency GIZ to train local engineers and vendors on equipment maintenance. The government has also issued instructional handbooks in English and Bengali to help new users manage the technology.
According to Minister Nath, the initiative encourages residents to view solar power as an income-generating asset rather than just a way to offset utility bills. This effort is part of the broader PM-Surya Ghar Yojana, which has already seen over 17,000 registrations and 3,500 successful installations across the state.
