Agartala: The Tripura government is set to deploy drone technology starting next month to identify and repair faulty power transmission lines in the state's most remote and difficult terrains. Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced the initiative on Tuesday following a review meeting led by Chief Minister Manik Saha, which focused on overcoming infrastructure challenges and improving service reliability. The deployment aims to address persistent power outages during the monsoon season, when challenging geography often hampers the efforts of repair crews.
In addition to drone integration, the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited plans to adopt a live wire maintenance system. This advanced technology, currently unavailable elsewhere in the Northeast, will allow technicians to perform repairs without requiring a full shutdown of the power supply. This change is expected to significantly reduce downtime for residents during maintenance operations.
The state is also advancing its underground cable laying project, which is structured in three phases. Officials expect this infrastructure upgrade to be completed within the Agartala Municipal Corporation area by early 2028, further safeguarding the local power supply from seasonal weather disruptions.
Complementing these grid improvements, the government is expanding solar energy infrastructure through the Tripura Renewable Energy Development Agency. Efforts include the installation of microgrids in isolated hilly regions and the promotion of central government initiatives like the PM Kusum and PM Suryaghar schemes to increase renewable energy adoption among farmers and households.
