Agartala: The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has approved a grant of Rs 273.46 crore dedicated to the infrastructure development and expansion of the Agartala Government Medical College. Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha announced the funding on May 15, expressing his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister JP Nadda for their support in strengthening the state medical sector.

The sanctioned capital is earmarked for a major expansion project scheduled to take effect from the 2026 to 2027 academic session. This development will introduce 100 additional MBBS seats along with 83 postgraduate seats across 19 critical and specialty medical disciplines. Once these seats are integrated, the state will reach a total capacity of 550 MBBS seats and 196 postgraduate seats.

Chief Minister Saha highlighted that this initiative represents a record increase in medical education capacity over the past four years. By enhancing the physical and educational infrastructure of the college, the state government aims to improve healthcare services for its citizens while providing greater opportunities for local students. The project is expected to play a vital role in addressing the rising demand for trained medical professionals throughout Tripura.
