Agartala: Tripura has reached a historic milestone in public health as its Infant Mortality Rate dropped to 12 deaths per 1,000 live births in 2024. This figure, revealed in the latest Sample Registration System Bulletin released in May 2026, places the state well ahead of the national average of 24.

Chief Minister Manik Saha highlighted the consistent progress made over the last three years. The state recorded an IMR of 17 in 2022 and 15 in 2023, showing a steady downward trend. When compared to other northeastern states, Tripura maintains a strong lead, as Assam recorded an IMR of 29, Meghalaya 31, and Arunachal Pradesh 17.

State health officials attributed this success to several key initiatives. These include expanded immunization coverage, increased institutional deliveries, and the strengthening of Special Newborn Care Units and Newborn Stabilisation Units. Enhanced nutrition support programs and community-based health interventions also played a significant role in the improvement.

Beyond infant mortality, the state report indicated positive demographic shifts. Tripura recorded a birth rate of 15 per 1,000 population and a death rate of 5.9, both of which are lower than the respective national averages of 18.3 and 6.4. Consequently, the state natural growth rate stands at 9.1, lower than the national figure of 11.9.

Chief Minister Saha credited the improvements to sustained focus on maternal and child healthcare. He also expressed appreciation for the support provided by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister J. P. Nadda in strengthening the healthcare infrastructure across the state.
