Agartala: Tripura Animal Resources Development and Fisheries Minister Sudhangshu Das recently identified the Northeast as a region with the potential to become a primary national hub for fisheries and dairy. Speaking at a regional review meeting in Mizoram alongside Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh, Das emphasized that these sectors are essential for strengthening rural livelihoods, nutritional security, and the broader regional economy.
The state has focused on implementing centrally sponsored initiatives to drive this growth. Programs such as the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana, the Rashtriya Gokul Mission, and the National Livestock Mission have been instrumental in boosting infrastructure and farmer income. Das noted that Tripura is making significant strides in scientific aquaculture and fish seed production, while also prioritizing modern necessities like cold chain facilities and feed mills.
To support the animal husbandry sector, the government is expanding veterinary healthcare and artificial insemination services. Efforts include localized vaccination drives and improved fodder development for rural communities. Das credited the region's rich biodiversity and favorable climate as key advantages for livestock, poultry, and piggery development.
The minister urged for closer cooperation between states to maximize these natural benefits. He called for increased investment, improved regional connectivity, and the adoption of advanced technology to fully realize the potential of the Northeast. By continuing to implement these central schemes with a coordinated strategy, Das expressed confidence that the region will play a central role in the country's future agricultural growth.
