Tripura Marks Birth Centenary of Poet Laishram Samarendra

Imphal: Literary enthusiasts and scholars filled the Agartala Press Club on June 30 to honor the birth centenary of Manipuri poet Laishram Samarendra. The event brought together voices from Manipur and Tripura to celebrate a life dedicated to literature. The Laishram Samarendra Birth Centenary Celebration Committee and the Patriotic Writers Forum of Tripura organized the tribute.

Sahitya Akademi winner Saratchand Thiyam served as chief guest. He urged the crowd to remember the writers who defined the community. He noted, "Commemorating distinguished literary figures is a collective responsibility." Thiyam pushed for similar events to honor legends like Hijam Anganghal and Kavi Chaoba.

The program featured recitations of Samarendra’s poems by family members. A seminar followed, where experts analyzed his foresight into modern social struggles. The day concluded with a poets' meet involving 18 participants from across the region. Rakesh Naorem confirmed the year-long celebration will wrap up in Imphal on July 20.
