Agartala: A Special POCSO Court in Ambassa handed down a 14-year rigorous imprisonment sentence to Bijoy Ghosh on Monday, August 31. The conviction follows the 2016 rape of a 15-year-old girl. Special Judge Dhiman Debbarma presided over the case, officially registered as Special POCSO 02/2025.

The court hit Ghosh with a Rs 10,000 fine. He faces an extra six months behind bars if he fails to pay. Additionally, the judge ordered Rs 5 lakh in compensation for the victim. Justice arrived late. The legal process dragged on for years because Ghosh went on the run.

The ordeal began on April 10, 2016, with a complaint at the Manu Police Station under case number 2016 MNU 011. The original charges included Section 376(D) of the IPC and Section 8 of the POCSO Act. Then Woman Sub-Inspector Sima Das Choudhury, now an Inspector at East Agartala Women Police Station, filed the chargesheet on May 30, 2017.

The trial examined 23 witnesses. Prosecutors targeted four suspects: Ghosh, Rohit Chakma, Mangal Debbarma, and Shubham Chakma. While Ghosh received his sentence under Section 376(1) of the IPC, the other three men escaped conviction. Authorities noted that "police expressed hope that the judgment would provide some measure of relief to the victim and her family, who have waited nearly a decade for justice."
