Agartala: The Tripura government has introduced a new initiative to install rooftop solar panels for approximately 1.5 lakh households. Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced the plan during the release of the Rooftop Solar PV System Handbook in Agartala, noting that the project aims to support residents who have low monthly electricity consumption.
The state is implementing this project in partnership with the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited to promote renewable energy and lower household power costs. Families opting for a 1 kilowatt solar system will pay only Rs 1,000 for the installation. Subsidies are tiered based on capacity: residents receive Rs 33,000 for a 1 kW system, Rs 66,000 for a 2 kW setup, and Rs 85,800 for a 3 kW unit.
State officials estimate that reaching the target of 1.5 lakh households could generate roughly 150 MW of electricity. Currently, 17,000 consumers have registered under the PM Suryaghar Scheme, with 3,500 installations already completed. The state has achieved 11 MW of solar capacity so far.
To ensure the long-term success of the project, the government is working alongside the Asian Development Bank and the German development agency GIZ. This collaboration includes providing technical training for engineers and vendors to maintain and repair solar systems effectively.
