Agartala: The Tripura government is launching an expansive rooftop solar initiative designed to provide affordable energy to nearly 150,000 households. The program targets families who consume fewer than 50 units of electricity each month, aiming to lower costs while increasing the state's reliance on renewable power.
Under the new scheme, eligible residents can have solar systems installed for a nominal fee of Rs 1,000. The government will cover the remaining expenses through a subsidy framework that provides Rs 33,000 for 1 kW systems, Rs 66,000 for 2 kW systems, and Rs 85,800 for 3 kW units. This effort is expected to generate 150 megawatts of solar capacity across the state.
Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced that the project is a collaboration between the state government, the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited, and the Asian Development Bank. The initiative builds on the existing PM Suryaghar scheme, which has already facilitated 3,500 solar installations and secured 11 MW of generation capacity.
To support the rollout, the state is investing in technical training for engineers and vendors through a partnership with the Germany-based organization GIZ. Authorities have also released informational handbooks in English and Bengali to help residents navigate the installation process. The long-term goal of the program is to empower consumers to produce their own electricity and potentially generate income by selling surplus power back to the grid.
