Agartala: The Tripura government has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the death of 24-year-old Manisha Das, a staff member at Shantiniketan Medical College in Agartala. Das was found hanging from a ceiling fan in her hostel room late Wednesday night, prompting a formal investigation to be submitted by District Magistrate Dr. Vishal Kumar within 15 days.

While local police initially classified the incident as a probable suicide, the family of the deceased has filed a complaint alleging murder. Her mother questioned why Das was required to stay at the hostel overnight, stating, "Why was my daughter made to stay at night when her duty ended at 5 pm? Who forced her to stay?" The family suggests Das may have been silenced after discovering sensitive information at the institution.

Amtali Sub-Divisional Police Officer Paramita Pandey confirmed that officers arrived at the scene with forensic teams after students and staff broke down the locked hostel door to reach Das. Police have seized CCTV footage and detained one individual for questioning. According to SDPO Pandey, preliminary findings suggest suicide because the room was secured from the inside, though she emphasized that the investigation remains open pending the results of the post-mortem examination at GB Pant Hospital.

The death has sparked tension on the medical college campus, with calls growing for a transparent and impartial probe. Authorities maintain that a final determination regarding the cause of death will only be made once forensic reports are fully reviewed.
