Agartala: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha recently chaired a high-level meeting at the TIFT Conference Hall to review the progress of various infrastructure projects concerning the state's power, drinking water, and sanitation departments. Accompanied by Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath and senior government officials, the Chief Minister emphasized the need to maintain high quality standards while ensuring the timely completion of ongoing developments across Agartala and other urban regions.

A significant portion of the discussion focused on the expansion of solar energy. To enhance public safety, the Chief Minister directed officials to identify areas prone to anti-social activities and install solar-powered high mast lights. Furthermore, the government aims to install solar panels in 1.5 lakh urban homes. Under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, authorities have already facilitated the installation of 2,845 solar units, distributing subsidies totaling over Rs 53 crore. Additionally, solar panels have been successfully implemented at all District Magistrate offices across the state, and officials are currently evaluating a solar-based power supply plan for Matabari.

Technical updates provided by the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) highlighted significant progress in grid modernization. Between 2023 and early 2026, the state installed 27 new 33 kV substations and multiple ring main units with financial backing from the Asian Development Bank. Significant investments of Rs 264.75 crore are nearing fruition for underground transmission lines and covered conductors, while a separate Rs 1,500 crore project in Agartala is advancing with the construction of a smart grid control centre. Smart meter installation is also moving forward rapidly, with 70 per cent of the target met for 1.5 lakh units in Agartala and Mohanpur, supported by additional installations under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme.

To ensure consistent power delivery, the Tripura Power Transmission Limited is incorporating advanced technology into its operations. This includes the use of drone monitoring and live-line maintenance systems, which are being deployed as part of the Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment Scheme to provide more reliable electricity to residents.
