Agartala: Tripura Traffic Police are cracking down on unpaid e-challans ahead of Durga Puja. Vehicles with outstanding fines will be blocked from entering restricted zones during the festival. Chief Minister Manik Saha ordered the move to address a massive backlog of nearly 16 lakh unpaid tickets dating back to 2020. Total pending fines sit at Rs 160 crore.
Traffic Superintendent of Police Kanta Jangir confirmed the new rules on September 25. "Vehicles with pending traffic fines will not be issued passes to enter designated no-entry zones during the Puja period," Jangir said. Last year, authorities handed out 6,500 passes. This year, the department is shifting to a fully digital system to prevent fraud.
Officials warn that anyone caught tampering with or duplicating these digital passes faces severe penalties. This includes potential legal action, immediate cancellation of the pass, and a lifetime ban on future applications. The department expects to use these passes primarily for emergency services.
No-entry zones take effect from October 17 through October 20. Restrictions run daily from 5 pm to 1 am. Officials added two new no-entry stretches to the plan this year. Buses, autorickshaws, and light vehicles must stop at identified terminal points to prevent gridlock. Cargo trucks face even tighter rules, with restricted hours from 5 pm to 6 am. Checkpoints include the Amtali Bypass, Khayerpur Bypass, and the area under Ranirbazar police station. Police will monitor these spots with new CCTV cameras and drop gates.
