Agartala: Kalyani Roy, the BJP chief whip in the Tripura Assembly, has proposed that the state government adopt a four-day work week for employees. To maintain current productivity levels, she suggested extending daily office hours from eight to approximately nine hours.
This proposal aims to support ongoing fuel conservation efforts prompted by the conflict in West Asia. Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently urged citizens to prioritize energy savings, leading Tripura to implement various austerity measures. These include reducing the number of escort vehicles for Chief Minister Manik Saha, cabinet ministers, and other MLAs.
The state government has already taken steps to limit travel by requiring half of all Group C and Group D employees to work from home since May 14. This rotation system aims to lower administrative expenditures and decrease daily fuel usage across the state. Officials noted that while Tripura maintains a robust digital infrastructure with e-office systems reaching down to the gram panchayat level, the active participation of these employees is vital for administrative efficiency.
Roy also encouraged the general public to join these conservation efforts. She suggested that citizens opt for public transportation, e-rickshaws, or bicycles whenever possible for shorter trips, emphasizing that the long-term impact of the current geopolitical situation remains uncertain.
