Imphal: Van Mahotsav Week 2026 kicked off today in Tamenglong, Manipur. Officials and students gathered near the Mini Secretariat to start a series of tree planting drives and awareness programs. The week-long event runs through July 7 under the national campaign Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 3.0.

The Tamenglong Forest Division and District Administration organized the effort. Their goal is to turn the tide against environmental damage. They aim to secure a greener future through consistent action. Divisional Forest Officer Amit Kaler urged locals to plant a tree for their mother.

Kaler emphasized the urgency of the situation. "We are facing numerous challenges due to deforestation. Landslides and floods are becoming increasingly common, and these are directly linked to the loss of forests," he said. The Forest Department will provide free saplings to anyone ready to help.

Deputy Commissioner L. Angshim Dangshawa dismissed the idea that the district has enough trees. Constant tree felling drives soil erosion. He noted that the national forest cover target sits at 33 percent, while the country lags at 25 percent. He wants more school-based contests to involve students in conservation efforts. Local police, Assam Rifles personnel, and EMRS students planted trees to seal the program's opening.
