Taj Umiam Resort construction slated for autumn start

Shillong: Construction on the five-star Taj Umiam Resort and Spa kicks off this year. The Tata Group intends to start work in September or October. Timing depends on the weather. Rain stops the machines. Sources from the Indian Hotels Company Limited confirmed that engineering drawings and final plans are currently wrapping up. They wait for the monsoon to subside before breaking ground.

The luxury site covers 66 acres along the shores of Umiam Lake. It sits on the grounds of the existing 30-acre Orchid Lake Resort property. Planners originally eyed the nearby Lumpongdeng Island for the project, but they scrapped that idea. Strong public opposition forced the government to officially remove the island from the development. Project sources noted, "If everything goes as per plan, the work will begin by September-October, once the monsoon subsides."
