Synjuk Marks 15th Anniversary and Launches Next Phase of Forest Initiative

Shillong: The Synjuk Ki Hima Arliang Wah Umïam-Mawphlang Welfare Society commemorated its 15th foundation day this Monday at a ceremony held in Nongrum, Mawphlang. The milestone coincides with the launch of the fifth phase of the REDD+ project, an international initiative dedicated to forest conservation, biodiversity protection, and the reduction of carbon emissions.

RM Kurbah, Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya, served as the chief guest for the event. Kurbah presented awards to current and former members in recognition of their commitment to community welfare and environmental stewardship. During the address, Kurbah emphasized Mawphlang’s emerging status as a tourism destination and encouraged local youth to pursue professional opportunities within the sector to boost their livelihoods.

Society Chairman Tambor Lyngdoh credited the organization's success to the collaboration between traditional institutions, village authorities, and local residents. While forest protection remains the group's central mission, the organization has diversified its activities to include healthcare, agriculture, livestock farming, and eco-tourism.

“Our primary objective has always been to protect the environment while educating the public on the importance of conservation,” Lyngdoh said. He added that the society intends to further scale these efforts to provide broader benefits for the communities under its jurisdiction. The celebration also featured attendees from the Agriculture Department, various banking institutions, and Society President Lamphrang Blah.
