Guwahati: Trinamool Congress leader Sushmita Dev resigned from the Rajya Sabha on June 10, marking a significant political departure for the Mamata Banerjee-led party. Dev formally submitted her resignation to Chairman C P Radhakrishnan, requesting that it be processed immediately.

Shortly after the announcement, reports surfaced that Dev met with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in New Delhi. This interaction has fueled speculation that the former Silchar MP may soon join the Bharatiya Janata Party. While she has not confirmed her future plans, she addressed her exit from the Trinamool Congress while speaking to reporters. Dev stated, "I have left Trinamool Congress. It is a long story why I left TMC. I don't want to be in a situation where I am in two boats at the same time. I will not comment on Mamata Didi."

Dev, who previously served as the president of the All India Mahila Congress, joined the Trinamool Congress in 2021 after losing her seat in the 2019 parliamentary elections. She quickly became a prominent national spokesperson and a key representative for the party in the Upper House.

Her resignation follows a similar move by veteran TMC leader Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, who stepped down from the Rajya Sabha earlier in the week. In his resignation, Roy criticized the party leadership, citing issues with corruption and governance failures. These consecutive departures have highlighted growing internal dissent within the Trinamool Congress as the party faces mounting political pressure and internal factionalism.
