Agartala: The Supreme Court has upheld the conviction and life imprisonment of Tripura resident Gour Acharjee for the murder of his wife, Soma Acharjee. In a decisive judgment, the court identified the case as a simulated hanging, noting that the scene was staged to hide a homicide. The bench directed the Tripura police to immediately locate and arrest the convict, who is currently evading authorities.
The incident occurred on June 16, 2007, just 15 months after the couple married. Soma's father reported that she faced consistent physical and mental abuse over dowry demands for cash and a motorcycle. Despite multiple interventions by village elders and panchayat meetings, the domestic conflict persisted until her death.
Medical findings proved crucial to the conviction. A post-mortem examination uncovered blunt force trauma to the victim's head and a lack of indicators typically associated with hanging. Experts concluded that the victim was killed before being suspended to mimic a suicide. Neighbors also corroborated the history of abuse, testifying to frequent disturbances leading up to the crime.
While other family members were previously acquitted due to insufficient evidence, the court found the husband solely responsible for the injuries sustained inside the home. The justices emphasized that crimes committed within private residences cannot escape legal accountability simply because they lack eyewitnesses.
