Shillong: Tensions are rising in Meghalaya following the discovery of two young Hajong community members who were found dead on June 14 at Lumsohphoh in Nongthymmai. The victims, 21-year-old Simanta Hajong and 22-year-old Prinomi Hajong, were found near a roadside cafe on the Shillong-Jowai road. While local police maintain the deaths appear to be a double suicide, student unions representing the Hajong and Koch communities have publicly rejected this conclusion.
The Hajong Students’ Union and the Meghalaya Koch Students’ Union argue that the public nature of the site makes the suicide theory highly improbable. They highlighted that both individuals were employed and had secure housing, raising questions about why they would choose such a visible location for their final moments. The groups have formally called for a professional, independent, and transparent investigation into the incident to restore public confidence in the local justice system.
In a joint statement, the unions urged officials to prioritize the case and ensure accountability for those involved. “Given the sensitive nature of the incident, we believe that the matter deserves a thorough, transparent and impartial investigation,” the unions declared. Their demands are supported by the Meghalaya Hajong Welfare Association, which has called for a fast-track process to provide answers to the families.
Community members held a candlelight vigil at Khyndai Lad to honor the victims. As the investigation continues, representatives have appealed for the public to maintain peace while advocating for the protection and security of marginalized groups across the state.
