Shillong: Members of the West Jaintia Students' Union caught 11 Bangladeshi nationals and a local tout early Sunday. The group included four men, six women, and a four-month-old infant. None carried valid travel documents.
The activists were checking cars on the Amlarem-Dawki road at 5:45 AM. The driver dumped the passengers mid-route to dodge the checkpoint. He told them to run into the nearby forest. Union members intercepted the vehicle and pressed the driver for answers. He eventually coughed up their hiding spot.
The group admitted they slipped into India illegally through the Dawki border sector. The student union hauled the group and the driver, a man from Sohmynting, to the Amlarem Police Station. They filed an official complaint. The union is worried about the spike in people crossing the War Jaintia border. They plan to keep patrolling the area to track illegal movement. "The student body said it would continue monitoring the area in coordination with the police and local residents to check unauthorised cross-border movement."
