Kohima: The Eastern Nagaland College Students’ Union has put Chief Minister Dr. Neiphiu Rio on notice. They want immediate action to finish two stalled New Model Degree Colleges in Noklak and Shamator. Union leaders Mankap C. Konyak and Pongo P. Khiamniungan delivered a formal plea to the Chief Minister on July 31.
Construction work is lagging. The student body noted that “visible progress on the ground remains far from satisfactory.” Officials argue that the delay hits students in one of the state's most educationally deprived regions hardest. For decades, many have dropped out or traveled long distances because local infrastructure failed them.
The union insists these schools are not just standard development projects. They call them a “long-overdue commitment to educational justice and equitable regional development.” The group wants the government to release all pending funds and clear technical roadblocks immediately. They also demanded strict deadlines and ongoing project oversight until the campuses open. The union reminded the state that “every delay adversely affects the future of countless students.” They promised to assist the government to get these colleges finished.
