Aizawl: The Mizo Zirlai Pawl is demanding a total review of electoral rolls in Mizoram. The student group flags a massive 121 percent jump in voter numbers within Chakma-majority districts. They suspect illegal immigration is fueling this spike. The organization compared 2005 records against 2024 lists to track the growth.

The data shows 195 villages deemed vulnerable saw voters balloon from 43,540 to 96,531. While some existing towns grew by 31 percent, the MZP flagged 97 villages that simply did not exist in the 2005 records. These new spots account for nearly 40,000 voters.

MZP president C. Lalremruata pointed to the findings at a Tuesday press conference. "The MZP conducted an independent analysis comparing the base 2005 roll with the 2024 lists and has discovered an exponential increase in voter numbers and emergence of 97 new villages specifically in Chakma-dominated areas that did not exist in 2005," he stated.

The group claims they found people holding both Indian and Bangladeshi citizenship. Some entries even lack basic house numbers. The MZP now plans to push the Chief Electoral Officer for a strict audit of all 195 villages. They want election officials to scrub every illegal name from the books immediately.
