Student Group Demands Better Facilities at Assam Government Hospital

Guwahati: The Jagiroad Regional Unit of the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) has sounded the alarm over deteriorating conditions at the Mahatma Gandhi Model Hospital. Following a surprise inspection on June 9, members of the student organization reported widespread deficiencies that have long plagued the government-run facility.

During their visit, AASU delegates met with patients and the hospital’s Deputy Superintendent to address ongoing complaints. The findings revealed significant shortages of essential medications and a lack of available doctors. The team also noted technical issues with laboratory services and a lack of basic infrastructure, such as working fans, which has left patients and their families struggling in the high heat.

AASU leadership highlighted that vulnerable patients, including pregnant women and the elderly, are frequently subjected to long wait times in poor conditions. Manasjyoti Bhuyan, president of the Jagiroad Regional Unit, urged government officials to address these systemic failures immediately to ensure the facility meets local healthcare needs.

"The inspection exposed the poor state of healthcare services at the government-run hospital and called for immediate intervention by the concerned authorities to address the shortcomings," the student body stated. Bhuyan warned that if the state fails to make prompt improvements, the organization will organize a democratic agitation with the support of local residents.
