Student Group Claims Massive Voter Surge in Mizoram Border Areas

Aizawl: The Mizo Zirlai Pawl student group demands a full audit of voter rolls in Mizoram. Leaders claim an illegal surge in voters across southern areas. The group analyzed electoral records from 2005 through 2024. They found 195 villages saw voter counts jump from 43,540 to 96,531. That is a 121.7 percent hike. The group labeled this jump an alarming demographic shift.

MZP president C. Lalremruata says the data suggests more than simple population growth. He pointed to 97 villages that appear on current lists but did not exist in the 2005 records. These areas now hold nearly 40,000 voters. The organization alleges some people hold dual citizenship with Bangladesh or lack valid home addresses. They plan to petition the Chief Electoral Officer for a strict verification process.

Election officials have a different timeline. Joint Chief Electoral Officer Ethel Rothangpuii confirmed that the state is currently running a Special Intensive Revision. This process wraps up on June 28. Authorities will remove any person unable to link their family records back to the 2005 rolls. Draft rolls go live on July 4, with a window for public objections lasting through August 4. The student group wants action now.
