State Enforces Mandatory High Security License Plates

Kohima: Nagaland’s transport department is getting tough on license plates. Officials ordered strict enforcement of High Security Registration Plate rules across the state. The move follows a December 13, 2023, Supreme Court mandate backed by federal transport ministry directives.

Drivers must buy plates only from state-approved dealers. These vendors need type approval from the Central Road Research Institute or other authorized testing agencies. Authorities warned that anyone skipping these rules faces stiff penalties under the Motor Vehicles Act.

The department told dealers to stop all unauthorized work. Vendors cannot make or attach plates without clearance from local registering authorities. They must also update the VAHAN database for every vehicle. According to the state notification, officials will hold "defaulting vehicle owners and HSRP manufacturers" liable for violations.
