Shillong: The South West Khasi Hills District Congress Committee wants more muscle in the voter registration process. Party leaders met with district officials to demand that local Dorbar Shnongs help vet new applicants. They worry that illegal immigrants from the nearby Bangladesh border might slip onto the electoral rolls during the Special Intensive Revision. This move aims to protect the area from a demographic shift.
Kynpham V Kharlyngdoh led the party delegation. He insisted that the district administration must prioritize ground-level verification to keep the voter list clean. "We request that the verification process be carried out through rigorous field enquiry and strict scrutiny of documents," Kharlyngdoh said. The party argues that local leaders and NGOs are the only ones who can reliably spot outsiders.
The push for security comes with a warning against blocking legitimate citizens. Many local students and workers are currently away for their jobs or studies. The Congress wants the administration to ensure these people keep their voting rights despite their absence. Kharlyngdoh also called for new outreach programs. He noted that elderly and poor residents often struggle to get their identity cards because of confusion and a lack of support.
