South Garo Hills Villages Remain Without Power Despite Proximity to Office

Shillong: Eleven villages in the Chokpot sub-division stay in the dark. These habitations sit just five to six kilometres from the local Meghalaya Power Distribution Corporation Limited office. Clinton Marak, an aspiring MDC candidate for Rongrikkimgre, flagged the blackout following a site visit on September 26.

More than 2,000 people live in these communities. The list includes Minchi-Chiringgre, Kama-Minchi-Chiringgre, Rongbinggre, Waro-Songgitcham, Sangma-Matchokgre, Daji-Adugre, Daji-Boldakgre, Daji-Rongkuakgre, Buga-Kolgre, Chisrenggre, and Waro-Songgital. Residents here go without basic digital access, schooling, or healthcare support.

Marak filed an RTI request in July. The MePDCL claimed it had no records of unelectrified villages in the area. Marak rejected this response after seeing the situation firsthand. He stated, "the department had no record of unelectrified villages under its jurisdiction."

The candidate now demands that the Power Minister and state government step in. He wants officials to verify the local conditions and fix the power grid immediately.
