Guwahati: Police arrested six people in Silchar on Friday night after breaking up a human trafficking deal. Officers raided a rented house in the Berenga area following a tip. They recovered a two-and-a-half-year-old toddler. They also seized 57,900 rupees in cash from the scene.
Sultana Begum Laskar of Jhanjharbali wanted to adopt because she could not conceive. She connected with local intermediaries Swapna Begum Laskar and her husband, Bahar Uddin. The pair promised to find a child. They eventually reached Rajmul Ali and Rosna Begum from Lailapur French Nagar Forest Village. The parents allegedly agreed to hand over their youngest son for 55,000 rupees.
Officers moved in before the transaction finished. The child now stays in a shelter home. Officials are still digging into the operation to find other potential players in the trafficking network. "Police said further investigation is underway to determine whether others were involved in the alleged child trafficking and sale network."
Those in custody include the parents, Rajmul Ali and Rosna Begum. Authorities also booked the buyer, Sultana Begum Laskar. Intermediary Swapna Begum Laskar, along with Nabidul Islam Laskar and Nurul Islam Laskar, face charges as well.
