Guwahati: Silchar Police raided a rented house in the Berenga area on Friday night, interrupting a deal to sell a two-and-a-half-year-old toddler. Officers seized 57,900 rupees in cash at the scene. Six suspects are now in custody.

Sultana Begum Laskar, of Jhanjharbali, sought to acquire a child because she could not conceive. She engaged Swapna Begum Laskar and Bahar Uddin to facilitate the search. The intermediaries contacted Rajmul Ali and Rosna Begum, residents of Lailapur French Nagar Forest Village. The parents of four sons agreed to sell their youngest for 55,000 rupees.

Police arrested Rajmul Ali, Rosna Begum, Sultana Begum Laskar, Swapna Begum Laskar, Nabidul Islam Laskar, and Nurul Islam Laskar. The victim is safe. The child has been placed in a shelter home for protection. Authorities are checking for more participants in what police called an "alleged child trafficking and sale network." Investigations continue.
