Gangtok: Sikkim has recorded a consistent downward trend in suicide rates over the past three years. According to the state Health and Family Welfare Department, this progress follows a series of dedicated mental health and suicide prevention initiatives.

Data released on Monday shows the suicide rate dropped from 43.1 per lakh population in 2022 to 40.2 per lakh in 2023. The trend continued into 2024, with the rate falling further to 36.3 per lakh. These figures represent a 6.7 per cent reduction between 2022 and 2023, followed by a 9.7 per cent decline from 2023 to 2024.

State officials believe the positive shift proves that targeted interventions are working. The department noted that these outcomes are "evidence of the impact of ongoing awareness campaigns, counseling services, and community-based interventions" aimed at addressing mental health challenges. While the recent data reflects a meaningful improvement, the department stressed that sustaining these efforts remains critical to protecting vulnerable individuals.
