Gangtok: Sikkim is scrapping mandatory weekly shop closures through the end of the year. The government wants to spark trade during the packed festive season. This rule change kicks in on October 10 and stays active until December 31.

Officials issued the order through the Labour Department. It relies on Section 5 of the Sikkim Shops and Commercial Establishment Act and Rule 3 of the accompanying guidelines. Stores across the state can now keep their doors open seven days a week.

Business owners have a catch. They must still grant employees their weekly time off. The government mandate is clear: "ensure that workers employed by them are provided their weekly holidays despite the exemption from the mandatory closure requirement."
