Sikkim Democratic Front Questions New Private University Law

Gangtok: The Sikkim Democratic Front slammed the Sikkim Private Universities Amendment Bill, 2026. The Sikkim Legislative Assembly passed this law during its recent Budget Session. Now, questions persist about student safeguards. Komal Chamling, the in-charge of the SDF Cheli Morcha, led the attack in a video statement on July 26.

She highlighted the addition of Section 72A. This section dictates the state government bears no liability for degrees, diplomas, or certificates issued by private colleges. The original Act is only one year old. This rapid change creates major uncertainty. Chamling asked a sharp question: "If the state government is not responsible for the validity of academic certificates issued by private universities, then who will ultimately protect the interests of students?"

The opposition also flagged the Independent Regulatory Commission. It now holds broader power to grant Letters of Authorisation to private schools. Chamling wants to know if this body truly has the teeth to regulate. She demanded a full report on the commission. Specifically, she wants a list of all schools examined and the status of any actions taken against Sikkim International University.

The SDF insists the government must prove it cares about academic integrity. Students face a murky future. "The future of students cannot be left in uncertainty. Transparency and accountability are essential to maintain public confidence in higher education. The SKM government must answer these legitimate questions and assure students that their academic qualifications will remain protected," she said. The party now waits for a formal response from the SKM administration.
