Itanagar: Persistent flooding of the Siang River is carving through agricultural land in Borguli village. The water is destroying Wet Rice Cultivation fields, putting the survival of local farmers at risk. The East Siang district's Mebo Sub-Division remains under constant threat.
On Wednesday, a team of officials assessed the wreckage. Those present included Tatling Pertin, the ADC in-charge of the Deputy Commissioner, Mebo ADC Nancy Yirang, and Namsing CO Toimi Tagi. They walked the sodden ground alongside Water Resources Department AE Bani Langkam, ZPM Bapiyang Tayeng, and local Gaon Burahs.
Erosion claimed standing paddy crops in Otil Tayeng's fields. The river's shifting course has been relentless. Since 2021, high water has swallowed cash-crop plantations, bamboo groves, and deep topsoil. This region acts as a primary rice bowl for Arunachal Pradesh. Every lost acre cuts into the food and income for Borguli and its neighbors.
Officials plan to file a formal damage report with higher authorities. The farmers are desperate for help. They demand action. Local villagers issued a clear plea for support: "The affected villagers appealed to the state and central governments for immediate intervention, adequate compensation and durable flood-control and erosion-protection structures." They want a permanent fix to stop the river from stealing their property and their future.
