Guwahati: The Siang River is eating away at the Kongkin area of Borguli village. Flooding has wiped out Wet Rice Cultivation fields and threatens the livelihoods of farmers in the Mebo sub-division of East Siang district, Arunachal Pradesh. The damage is significant.
Tatling Pertin, the ADC in-charge Deputy Commissioner, led a team to inspect the destruction on Wednesday. Joining him were Mebo ADC Nancy Yirang, Namsing CO Toimi Tagi, Water Resources Department Assistant Engineer Bani Langkam, Monggu Banggo-I ZPM Bapiyang Tayeng, and local Gaon Burahs. The group surveyed the wreckage left by the shifting river.
Farmer Otil Tayeng watched his standing paddy crop disappear into the water. This area acts as a primary rice-producing hub for the region. Farmers report that recurring floods have claimed cash-crop plantations, bamboo groves, and fertile soil since 2021. The situation is dire.
The visiting officials are drafting a detailed assessment report for higher authorities. Villagers are demanding immediate aid and compensation for their lost property. They want permanent infrastructure to stop the erosion, noting that "recurring floods and the changing course of the Siang River have washed away large portions of cash-crop plantations, bamboo groves and fertile agricultural land in the area since 2021."
