Guwahati: Shivangi Sonowal, a resident of Dangari village in the Tinsukia district of Assam, has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first Assamese woman to graduate as a Fire Engineer. She completed her intensive training at the National Fire Service College in Nagpur, an institution operating under the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The path to this qualification required four years of rigorous academic and practical study, covering fire prevention, emergency management, and industrial safety. Sonowal secured her spot in the competitive programme in 2022 after navigating the JEE Main examination and passing demanding physical and medical screenings. The institution typically accepts only about 60 students annually, with women representing a small fraction of each cohort.

Reflecting on the competitive nature of the field, sources at the college noted that she is the first woman from her state to complete this specialised engineering discipline. Officials stated, "Shivangi is the first Assamese woman to graduate as a Fire Engineer from the institute, making her achievement a landmark moment not only for her family but also for the state."

Following her graduation on May 29, Sonowal has already secured employment with a gas company through campus recruitment. Her success has been met with widespread celebration in her home village, where she is being recognised as an inspiration for students seeking to pursue unconventional careers.
